Joe Carnahan to Direct Thriller “The Grey”

Joe Carnahan has gotten himself a reputation of making fast-paced action movies with Smoking Aces, Blood, Guts, Bullets and Cocaine and The A-Team. But now he seems to be stepping into the thriller genre with The Grey, an upcoming film with wolves, sub-zero temperatures and Liam Neeson.

According to Deadline, The Grey is about a group of oil-rig workers who get stranded in the Alaskan tundra after a plane crash. As luck would have it, they crashed in a wolf pack’s hunting ground. The film has a full-packed cast list made up of: Liam Neeson of Liam Neeson fame, Rubicon stars Dallas Roberts and James Badge Dale, Dermot Mulroney whose only credit I thought looked interesting was in a hand puppet Dante’s Inferno movie, Frank Grillo from the cancelled ABC series The Gates, Nonso Anozie who had bit parts in RockNRolla and Atonement and Joe Anderson from Across the Universe. I am a little iffy on this cast. A couple of names on here I am really stoked about, but most of them are from movies I have never heard of or played in parts I didn’t even notice or were in cancelled TV shows. But, I have faith in Joe Carnahan. I have loved the movies of his I have seen and I believe he will make something pretty good.

Carnahan said that even though he was happy to making a indie film again, he did not really like having to film in Northern British Columbia (that’s in Canada). “It gets to be 30 below, and when we went out the other day, I took off my hat to see how long I could last, and my skin was burning with frostbite in a little over a minute.” But, he believes that the Canadian temperatures will be good for the movie “because it beats the shit out of the cast and that suits the storyline.” The storyline’s  focus on the wolf pack, according to Carnahan, “creates an opportunity for one of those man vs. nature movies I love like Deliverance and Touching The Void.”

No word yet on a release date, but I am pretty excited for this movie to come out.
