EA Thinks The First Two Dead Space Games Were Too Scary

Dead Space 3 was shown off at this year’s E3, and people did not respond well. EA took what was one of their best franchises, and I think their only horror franchise, and turned it into a pretty generic co-op action game. Many people were asking why EA would do something so stupid. Well, we now have our answer: Because the first two games were too scary.

In an interview with MCV, EA marketing boss Laura Miele said that according to market research the people that played Dead Space and Dead Space 2 were too uncomfortable with the scares in those games and wanted someone else with them.

“We were hearing feedback that they love the thriller game,” she said, “but it was pretty scary, and the obvious next step was that they wanted to play with someone. So we introduced co-op into the game.”

But don’t let the idea of having a wise-cracking partner with you at all times make you think the game won’t be as scary… Because you’d be wrong…

“The horror of Dead Space is still all there,” Miele continued, “It’s still true to its roots and no less scary, but people felt far more comfortable playing it with someone else than they did doing it on their own.”

I guess EA doesn’t really get the concept of horror. It’s supposed to make you uncomfortable. It’s about putting you into a situation where you have absolutely no control over anything and throwing all kinds of horrible at you. Why do you think in every horror movie the funny guy dies first? It’s so that he isn’t cracking jokes throughout the whole thing and making the audience feel more comfortable.

Whatever. Dead Space 3 is coming February 13th, 2013.
