James Gunn in Talks to Direct Guardians of the Galaxy

At Comic-Con Marvel Studios announced Guardians of the Galaxy as the first original movie in its line-up of Phase 2 movies. And, to be honest, it’s the one I am most looking forward to. It’s got a talking raccoon that carries a rocket launcher around with him and uses it to fight space crime. How is that not something you want to see immediately? But there’s one problem: The movie doesn’t have a director yet.

Not to worry, though, because Marvel Studios has someone in mind. That someone is James Gunn, director of Slither and Super, two movies I loved. The director is in talks with the studio, but nothing is official yet. Marvel still has a couple of directors on standby in case a deal can’t be struck with Gunn.

I really hope Marvel can make this deal work. Like I said above, Gunn has made some movies that I have really enjoyed and this movie sounds like it could be the right kind of crazy for him to get a good movie out of it. And Marvel aren’t idiots when it comes to choosing who to direct their movies. Every choice they’ve made for their Cinematic Universe have made a pretty spectacular movie, and hopefully Gunn will take the job and continue that trend.

Guardians of the Galaxy is scheduled for release August 1st, 2014.
