Marvel Announces Three New Series

Last week Marvel teased another three series for Marvel NOW!. Since I took so long writing this article they’ve already announced what those series are, so let’s just run them down. First up, there’s:

YOUNG AVENGERS

Teased as “Amateurs,” Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie are teaming up again to take on Young Avengers. The lineup for this new version of the team include Loki, Miss America, Kate Bishop, Noh-Varr, Wiccan, and Hulkling. Gillen said in an interview with CBR that more characters will be joining the team but that he wants to keep the team small. Or at least smaller than his Uncanny X-Men team. Each issue of the new series will also have some additional content through the Marvel AR App.

I don’t have that much of a history with this team. The only story of theirs I ever read was The Children’s Crusade, and I really liked it. I may dig a bit more into the team before I pick this issue up, but I’m looking forward to it.

Young Avengers 1 goes on sale January 2013.

Next up we have a series following everyone’s second favorite Canadian:

SAVAGE WOLVERINE

Teased as “Savage,” Frank Cho is going solo with Savage Wolverine. Cho, who is serving as writer and artist, did an interview with Marvel.com where he talked about his new book. This new story will be set in the Savage Lands and will be a team-up story with Shanna the She-Devil, another character Cho worked with. He described the series as an “Indiana Jones/Cthulhu type story,” with Wolverine as Indie and Shanna as Marion Ravenwood.

I fell off the Wolverine book a little while ago, but I am definitely jumping straight into this one. I like Cho’s artwork, and while I don’t exactly have a strong opinion on his writing it will be interesting to see how his writing turns out. And I know how this will look, but it’s cool to see Shanna again. I read the series Cho did a while back and I enjoyed it.

Savage Wolverine comes out January 2013.

Finally, we have the series that will follow Amazing Spider-Man after its 700th issue:

SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN

This is the one that most people are going to be the most wary of. Amazing Spider-Man has been a staple of the comic shelf for half a century now, and while he will still be there it just won’t be the same.

Teased as “Superior,” Superior Spider-Man is the follow up series to Amazing and probably has the distinction of having the biggest marquis of all the teasers, with Dan Slott, Ryan Stegman, Humberto Ramos, and Giuseppe Camuncoli gracing the teaser. In an interview with USA Today, Slott talked about the new series, and the new Spider-Man. A darker Spider-Man.

“I’ve always been the omniscient hand that’s been protecting Peter Parker and Spider-Man, and not letting anything too bad happen to him. And now I’ve become this cruel god. There’s something exciting about that, about going, ‘Mwah-ha-ha-ha-ha, here is what’s going to happen to you, Spider-Man!’ And it’s drastic and it’s big and it’s exciting and it’s never been done before.”

Yep, Spidey’s getting dark and shit. But that’s not all. His costume will be getting a change up, as well, to tie into some new abilities he’ll have. With those new abilities could come a new identity. They aren’t saying anything right now, which is surprising for Marvel, but Slott and Amazing editor Stephen Wacker have been teasing that Parker may be hanging up the webs and passing the torch on to someone new.

While I am a bit iffy on the “darker” Spider-Man they are talking about, I am still excited for this series. It’s written by the guy who’s been writing Spider-Man pretty much since I started reading it and while the first three issues will have Stegman doing the art, Ramos will be alternating with Camuncoli as the regular artist. So there’s that.

Superior Spider-Man will be launching January 2013.
