Good Universe to Adapt Angelfall with Evil Dead Creators

Young adult novels being made into movies is rapidly becoming a trend that I am not that fond of. Mainly because most of the YA-based movies I’ve seen or heard of have all been some degree of shit. With this announcement, though, I feel some hope for this particular adaptation. Partly because the premise actually does sound kind of cool, and partly because of the people behind it.

Good Universe announced yesterday that they have acquired the rights to Susan Ee’s young adult series Penryn & The End of Days and are developing an adaptation of the first book in the series, Angelfall. The series is set weeks after the angels invade the Earth and wipe out humanity for killing the Archangel Gabriel. During all the broo-ha-ha of the end of the world Penryn, a 17 year old girl, tries to get her mother and her disabled sister to safety and fails. After failing, she teams up with an angel who’s had his wings clipped to try to find her sister. I guess she didn’t like her mother very much.

While it sounds like this story has the usual pitfalls of a young adult story, it’s about an angel apocalypse. That alone is pretty cool. But what is really odd to me about this project is that Good Universe is working with Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert on it. Yes, the same Sam Raimi who wrote and directed the entire Evil Dead trilogy and the same Robert Tapert who produced the entire Evil Dead trilogy. That just sounds weird.

Anyway, I’m going to be keeping an eye on this project as it develops.
