RoboCop Remake to be PG-13

I think most people knew from the outset that the remake of RoboCop was going to be crap. Nowadays Hollywood doesn’t really have the balls to put out something like RoboCop. I mean, just read the title of this article again. You see what I mean?

At the RoboCop panel at San Diego Comic-Con, director Jose Padilha confirmed that the remake of the 1987 hyperviolent Paul Verhoeven film was being shot for a PG-13 rating. If you are a fan of RoboCop in any way, reading that sentence should have just made you cringe. During their panel Padilha said…

We were shooting the movie to be seen by the broadest possible audience, which means PG-13. This whole idea about RoboCop has to be R because the first one was amazingly violent… I never really bought into that. You know, The Dark Knight was PG-13, so you can get away with a lot.

Samuel L. Jackson was also at the panel, and he said that while RoboCop was R for its time, if it came out today it would be rated PG-13. I call shenanigans on that bullshit.

RoboCop was a bloody, brutal film that didn’t hold anything back, showing every gruesome detail. The corporation that ran Detroit in the film was corrupt as fuck, turning the city into a police state where the cops and businessmen were just as brutal and sadistic as the criminals who their supposed to be fighting. You can’t have really brutality with a PG-13 rating. How do you think Alex Murphy’s death scene or the ED-209 scene will be handled with a PG-13 rating?

RoboCop is set for release on February 7th, 2014.
