Deadpool Getting Married this April

DeadpoolWeddingFinal

Because I’m terrible at my job, I didn’t notice that for the past few weeks Marvel has been circulating images of wedding invitations with bloody puzzle pieces on them. I guess I’ve just been conditioned to ignore Marvel teasers because at this point they’re kind of meaningless since Marvel seems to produce more teasers than actual comics. But I probably should have because then the reveal that Deadpool is tying the knot would be even more of a shock than it already is.

Yes, you read that sentence and the title of the article right. Deadpool, the Merc with the Mouth, is getting hitched in the upcoming 27th issue of his book, according to writer Gerry Duggan in a recent interview with Nerdist. When asked if this was a stunt or something to help sell books, Duggan said…

The honest answer is that it was written into a Deadpool story, but more or less as a gag, and Jordan D. White, the editor, was like a dog with a bone. He was like, “No, no, no – this is going to be a big deal.” You know, we wrote it, so it’s not like we weren’t behind it. The fun thing has been – after his misadventures, I guess you’d call them, in North Korea, in the story arc “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly,” he learned a lot about himself and why he is the way he is. He doesn’t really have too much of a life. Yes, this is a knee-jerk reaction from a wounded guy to go out there and sort of do something crazy to sort of jump start a life, but there is a real emotional reason for doing it, so I think that will be the part that will resonate. Then the actual gags of the wedding will be fun too, but there is a real grounding to it, and that’s what will make it fun to explore.

As for who the lucky lady is or how long she’ll be staying around, we don’t know yet. Duggan said that even he’s “not 100% sure” how long she’ll be staying around, what with Deadpool being Deadpool and all.

I’m still a little behind on everything right now, but this announcement comes after quite a serious arc in the Deadpool book, what with him finding out people were frequently drugging him and running experiments on him, that he had a daughter, and that his daughter had been murdered by the people who were doing the drugging/experimenting. It’s going to be really interesting seeing how Deadpool gets to the point where he wants to get married and, more importantly, finds someone who wants to marry him.

Deadpool gets hitched April 2014 in Deadpool #27.
