PlayStation 4 Getting $50 Price Increase in Canada

Ever since I bought the PS4 at launch, I’ve been kind of regretting it. There are barely any games out for it, and I’ve played every one that is out that I’m interested in. But now, seeing as how I am a Canadian, I’m glad I got it when I did.

Sony announced this past Friday that in Canada the price of the PS4 will be increasing from $399.99 to $449.99 effective this past Saturday, March 15th, 2014. The DualShock 4 and the PlayStation Camera will also be going up in price, from $59.99 to $64.99. Sony said in a statement that the reason for the price changes are “to respond to changes in the market environment.” Many people believe this is referring to the declining value of the Canadian dollar, but it wasn’t specifically mentioned.

The price hikes are also being seen in games, with many titles being pushed up to $64.99 each. Two Sony exclusives, Infamous: Second Son and MLB 14 The Show, are going the extra mile by costing $69.99 each.

This is just getting ridiculous. Video games are already really expensive, so bumping up the prices on them will only end up hurting the industry. Even if it’s just in Canada, there are probably still enough of us up here for this to have an impact. Maybe not a big one, but still.
