500k New ‘n’ Tasty Sales Means New Oddworld Game

oddworldpost

Oddworld is a franchise that has a pretty big fanbase but not a lot of love in the mainstream. The last game in the series to be released was Stranger’s Wrath, which came out over nine years ago. But with Oddworld Inhabitants teaming up with developer Just Add Water, people are starting to get into Oddworld again. If enough people are into the upcoming HD remake of the original game, we could even get a new game.

While speaking with Eurogamer at GDC, Oddworld creator Lorne Lanning said that if Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty, an HD remake of Abe’s Oddysee, sells over half a million units we could be getting a new installment in the Oddworld franchise. Lanning said that a new Oddworld game isn’t “anything less than a $5 million title.” He also addressed why he can’t just go to Kickstarter to get a couple million dollars, saying…

And I’m like ‘What would I do with a couple million on Kickstarter? On a new Oddworld title?’ Not much. I could redo Exoddus for a couple million. I could do that. But a new title, which means new characters doing new things and controls that are great – that’s where the real time and expenses come from.

Lanning went on to say that the title he is most interested in seeing as the next Oddworld game is The Brutal Ballad of Fangus Klot, a projected that was scrapped a while ago but has been resurrected by Lanning. However, other people at the studio have other ideas for what they want to be the next Oddworld game, so Fangus Klot is not guaranteed.

Even if New ‘n’ Tasty doesn’t meet its pretty reasonable goal of 500,000 units, we will still get another Oddworld game. Lanning said that if New ‘n’ Tasty sells 250,000 units then we’ll be getting an HD remake of Abe’s Exodus, the direct sequel to Abe’s Oddysee, and Lanning is very confident about that sales figure.

Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty is coming to PS3, PS4, and PS Vita this spring.
