Mystery Science Theater 3000 Making a Comeback

mst3kpost

Back in the halcyon days of the late 1980s, a show was created in Minneapolis, Minnesota, that soon grew to be way bigger than anyone could have anticipated. Winning multiple awards, gaining a huge and loyal fanbase, and being called one of the greatest TV shows of all time, it’s kind of amazing what Mystery Science Theater 3000 was able to accomplish in six seasons. But even with those seasons, as well as RiffTrax, a site with thousands of commentary tracks from Mike, Crow, and Tom Servo, people still want more MST3K. And now they’re finally going to get it.

Joel Hodgson, the original creator of MST3K, recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund a brand new 12 episode season of the show. It will be Crow T. Robot, Tom Servo, and new host Jonah Ray from the Nerdist Podcast, watching old B-movies and riffing them, with the story that a mad scientist is making them watch the movies. You know, for world domination purposes. Presumably, anyway. The video on the Kickstarter page has a silhouette in the video thumbnail labeled, “The Next Mad?,” so it’s safe to assume that whole plot is coming back.

Speaking of the new mad, users on Reddit are saying that Felicia Day will be stepping into the role. According to an Entertainment Weekly article in the print magazine (Thank you, 4chan), Day will be scientist who sends Jonah Ray into space to have him watch shitty movies.

There will also be new voices for Crow and Tom Servo. Again, according to Reddit and ostensibly the EW article, the other two riffers will be voiced by Hampton Yount (Crow) and Baron Vaughn (Servo).

Of the cast mentioned, Jonah Ray has been the only one officially confirmed by the Kickstarter page, so the other people could end up not appearing in the final product.

At time of writing, the Kickstarter has raised just over $2 million, securing a three episode season. For every $1.1 million earned past this, they will produce another three episodes, meaning that the full 12 episode season will need $5.5 million to get made.

The Kickstarter is running until December 12th, and you can find the campaign with all the info you need, as well as all of the reward tiers, by going to BringBackMST3K.com.
