Notch Wants to Fund Psychonauts 2
In 2005 Tim Schafer released his first game with his company Double Fine. It was called Psychonauts and it was awesome. Playing as a young psychic named Razputin runs aways from the circus to attend a summer camp to train people with psychic abilities. While there he stumbles upon a plot that involves stealing brains, rabbits and meat. It was an action platformer with awesome powers, great characters and comedy with a really interesting art style. Unfortunately it sold less than 100,000 units in 8 months and kinda fucked publisher Majesco over.
Schafer has stated that he wanted to do a sequel to the game. In a recent interview with Digital Spy Schafer said that he’d “actually pitched [Psychonauts 2]to publishers several times and no-one has taken the bait so far.” He went on to say:
“So it is hard because fans often don’t know how the business works, with the difference between a developer and a publisher, it’s hard to explain that. I’d love to do that game, but I’d have to convince someone to just give me a few million dollars, that’s all.”
Well someone may just have to few million Tim needs. Notch, founder of Mojang and creator of the PC crack that is Minecraft, tweeted shortly after Tim made this statement saying, “How many millions exactly?”
Shortly after tweeting that at Rock, Paper, Shotgun Notch tweeted directly @TimofLegend saying, “Let’s make Psychonauts 2 happen.” People weren’t really sure if this was a joke or not but Notch put all those doubts to rest by tweeting, “I’m serious.”
How serious is he? According to Eurogamer someone at Double Fine said, “Tim and Markus are talking.”
Dear god, I want this to happen so bad. Psychonauts was fantastic and is probably in some top X list in my head that I have subconsciously been crafting since I first picked up a game pad. If Notch and Tim work everything out and make this a thing I might just fly to Stockholm, track down Notch and hug him for an hour and a half.
