Evangelion Smartphone To Be Released This Summer

Over the last few years, Studio Khara has been updating and re-releasing the entire anime series of Neon Genesis Evangelion. They started  in 2007 with Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone, then released Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance in 2009. The third of the four films, Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo is set for release in Japan this fall. To help promote the film (presumably) Khara announced that there is going to be an Evangelion smartphone released this June.

Manufactured by Sharp and carried by Japanese company NTT DoCoMo, the DoCoMo NEXT series SH-06d NERV phone will have a stereoscopic 3D display like a few other phones manufactured by Sharp. This will be helpful for watching Evangelion 3D, a two minute short film made by Khara that will be exclusive to the phone.

There will also be a “3D Model Movie” which will show 22 things produced by Khara, including EVA units, Angels and entry plugs, in all their 3D splendor.

But the 3D doesn’t stop there. The phone will also have 3D home app called MAGI Home. It’s been designed to duplicate the terminal interface of the MAGI supercomputer from the anime. It will have 2D and 3D display options and will have over 100 custom icons.

An exclusive mini game, Attack of the 8th Angel, will come installed on every phone. Players will be able to pilot EVA-00, EVA-01 or EVA-02 and recreate the battle against the 8th angel from the second movie, You Can (Not) Advance.

The phone will have two optional panel covers. The Front/Rear NERV panel type, which is shown above, is probably my favorite of the two. The second, the Rear MAGI panel type, will have a holographic NERV logo. There is also a desktop holder for watching videos on the phone from the internet or from Japan’s new NOTTV digital broadcasting service.

In a couple of weeks more details will be revealed about the phone, like a “MAGI Widget,” more content for the phone aside from the Attack of the 8th Angel mini game and much more. Until then, though, we have this trailer for the phone… That just sounds weird. Do you guys want this phone? Let us know in the forums or in the comments below.
