Nintendo Decides to Trademark Ice Cube Lyrics

You won, Mario! Blap, blap, blap.

At one point or another, everyone has heard the saying “It’s on like Donkey Kong.” It has been associated with many different movies and few people actually know where the saying came from. Well, allow me to enlighten you.

In 1992 O’Shea Jackson, better known as the rapper Ice Cube, released an album called The Predator. On this album there was a song called “Now I Gotta Wet’cha.” The first line of this song is “It’s on like Donkey Kong.” Since then, that line has been used in American Wedding, the Scott Pilgrim marketing and in the lexicon of quite a few people. However, with the release of Donkey Kong Country Returns looming over the horizon Nintendo has decided to trademark the saying for use in the marketing for the game.

Now, unless they are actually going to be using the song in the commercials for the game the only reason I see for Nintendo to trademark a phrase that people already kinda associate with the company is that they need more money since the DS hasn’t been selling as well and the Wii keeps getting it’s price cut.  Maybe they should work on making better games instead of trying to get money for sayings that have been around for almost two decades.
