New Atlus Game Gets a Trailer

Yesterday, the development team behind Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 and 4 announced their first game for this generation of consoles. Catherine is about Vincent, a 32-year old salaryman who has given up on finding love. That is, until, he meets the titular Catherine, a 22-year old woman of “well-rounded proportions.” After meeting her, Vincent starts having these strange nightmares where he must climb an endless staircase to wake up while wearing nothing but his boxers and sheep antlers that grew out of the sides of his head. If he doesn’t, he will get slaughtered like the other anthropomorphic sheep. Like any game made by the Persona team, things get even weirder when Vincent hears about a man dying in his sleep and a killer dream. Catherine is being marketed to a much more adult audience, with more sex, blood and murder than the teams previous games. Not much is known about the actual gameplay. Katsura Hashino, the games director and producer, said that instead of making a “mainline RPG”, he and his team “wanted to try something different.” Not really sure what that means but it has peaked my interest.

Vincent had a cameo in Persona 3 Portable, a remake of Persona 3 released earlier this year. Could this game have some tie to the Persona series? Vincent will be voiced by Koichi Yamadera, who also voiced Spike Spiegel in Cowboy Bebop. Catherine will be voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro who did the voice of Celty Sturluson in Durarara!! While no North American release date has been announced, Catherine will hit shelves in Winter 2010.
