Marvel Announces New Thor

THOR2014001-cvr-6448d

Marvel, shortly after shaking things up with Infinity and Inhuman and turning Captain America into Grandpa America, have announced another shake up to their universe. And they made it through The View, of all places. I guess it makes a bit of sense, what with the announcement being that Thor is going to be a lady, but still… The View? Really?

Marvel has announced that a new book, simply called Thor, will be released this October and feature a woman who has taken up the mantle of Thor. This isn’t going to be like She-Hulk or Spider-Woman and be a female version of the pre-existing male character, as series writer Jason Aaron said in a press release…

This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before.

The book, to be written by Aaron and drawn by Cyclops artist Russell Dauterman, will see current Thor becoming unworthy of wielding Mjolnir. So this new lady, who was previously saved by Thor according to The View host Jenny McCarthy, will pick up the hammer and, being worthy, obtain the powers of Thor. Marvel editor Will Moss said in the press release that this new character “isn’t a temporary female substitute – she’s now the one and only Thor, and she is worthy!”

This is apparently part of a plan that Marvel has going on right now to bring in new readers by having more books with female leads, as the press release points out that this is the 8th title to feature a female protagonist that the company hopes will bring in more women comic book readers.

Thor #1, written by Jason Aaron and drawn by Russell Dauterman, goes on sale this October.
