Pacific Rim 2 Coming April 7th, 2017

I’m one of those people that is a bit hard on sequels to films that had no setup or need for a sequel. Pacific Rim works totally fine as a standalone film, and has no real need for a sequel. But it’s getting one, and I can’t goddamn wait for it. I’m going to have to though, as it’s not coming out for another three years.

Guillermo del Toro announced last week that Pacific Rim 2, the sequel to his awesome dumb giant robot movie, will be hitting theaters on April 7th, 2017. Not only that, but at some point between now and the release of the sequel, a Pacific Rim animated series is going to be released and that the comic series will be continuing. Del Toro is working on this stuff with Travis Beachman, who co-wrote the first film’s screenplay with del Toro, and Zak Penn, who wrote X-Men: The Last Stand and the first draft of The Avengers.

While speaking to BuzzFeed about the sequel, del Toro said…

The characters I love will return. Raleigh, Mako, Newt, Gottlieb and who knows, maybe even Hannibal Chau – but we are taking them into a fresh territory that will display amazing sights and battles. The first film set the stage and now we’re ready to have a blast.

The original cast is expected to return, but no officials deals have been made yet.

I am seriously excited for this movie. The first one was pretty stupid, but it was so entertaining and went against what basically every modern blockbuster movie is doing. It was a breath of fresh air coming from the exhaust port of a nuclear powered giant robot that just punched an acid spitting alien pterodactyl in the face.

Pacific Rim 2 is set for release on April 7th, 2017.
